The Sad Clown Paradox
The Sad Clown Paradox was created in 2023 but never officially performed. A remarkable clown duo set out to perform their act, losing themselves in the chase for audience approval. The piece explores the juxtaposition performers’ experience - the joyful personas shared and the contradictory emotions they really experience. A clown’s sole purpose is to entertain the spectator. Under the pressures of this exhibitionist role, anxiety, desire, jealousy, power, distrust, and the grotesque all come into play. Tension builds as the two rival for the spotlight, destroying their copacetic collaboration in the process. In the pursuit of applause, dignity is lost.
